August 6, 2010 – The Department of Emergency Management (DEM) and Building Code Compliance Office (BCCO) will travel to the Florida Building Commission (FBC) meeting in Melbourne, FL to oppose several proposed South Florida Building Code amendments. Technical Advisory Committees (TACs) will meet August 8th & 9th and the FBC will meet on Tuesday August 10th.
Amendments to the High Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ), otherwise known as the South Florida Building Code, have been filed that stand to weaken building codes that were put in place following Hurricane Andrew. Building Code amendments will be heard by the various TACs before being considered by the full Florida Building Commission on Tuesday, August 10, 2010.
A total of 172 roofing code modifications have been submitted for review. Approximately seventy are exclusively related to the HVHZ. The Code Administration and Structural TAC’s have code modifications that weaken the HVHZ roofing codes as well. Miami-Dade County Building Code Compliance Office estimates forty-two of the code modifications, if adopted, will weaken the HVHZ roofing codes.
