Locksmiths
All locksmith companies and individual locksmiths who provide services to the public must be licensed by the Consumer Services Department (CSD). The department conducts a criminal background check of applicants before granting a license.
Licensees must comply with all requirements of the Locksmith Ordinance.
The Locksmith Ordinance defines a locksmith as any person who installs, repairs, rebuilds, rekeys, repins, recodes, services, adjusts, opens or modifies locks, mechanical and electronic security locking devices and peripherals, safes, vaults, safe deposit boxes, and closed circuit television systems.
Locksmiths and locksmith companies are required to have insurance, and to have proper identification from the CSD before performing any of these services.
Note*: To download and fill out a permit and/or license application, visit the permits page and view a listing of permits and licenses separated by division.
