Miami-Dade County Artificial Reef Program

In order to protect our natural reefs from the stress of excessive human interaction while encouraging recreational fishing and sport diving in coastal waters, "artificial" reefs are created out of a wide array of objects ranging from steel hulled ships, to army tanks, to commercial aircraft, to specially designed reef "modules."

For more information, call 305-372-6859 or email reefs@miamidade.gov.

Phase 1 of the Artificial Reef Connectivity Project is complete

With partial funding from a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Grant, four connection artificial reefs were constructed utilizing limerock boulders and donated concrete from July 11-20, 2011. Two of these reefs are located in the inshore Mercy Artificial Reef Site and connect existing concrete and limerock artificial reefs. The other two connection reefs are located in the offshore Key Biscayne Special Management Zone.

The connection reefs at this site are part of the larger Belzona Wreck Trek and connect the Belzona II tug to the Belcher Barge and the Belcher Barge to the Parker-Schurger Barge complex. These new reefs will provide habitat connection for marine organism, additional fishing spots and a visual trail for divers to follow to enjoy the reefs.
