    Welcome to District 8

    Commissioner Sorenson, representing District 8 since 1994, has been an outspoken advocate for her community and all of Miami-Dade County. Commissioner Sorenson has worked diligently to enhance the quality of life for South Miami-Dade through wise economic and growth management policies, crime prevention initiatives, and protection of the region’s environmental resources. She has also been a staunch advocate for human rights, a champion of regional cooperation, a leader in child welfare issues, and a promoter of the arts.

    6th Annual Deering Seafood Festival

    6th Annual Deering Seafood Festival The rhythms of steel drums and towering stilt walkers greet festival goers as they are drawn into the magical, island-style celebration that has become the Deering Seafood Festival. On Sunday, March 28th from 11am to 6pm, seafood lovers of all ages come out and spend the day, because this event just keeps getting better.

    Commissioner Sorenson makes announcement regarding re-election

    On February 4, Commissioner Sorenson announced in a press conference that she will not seek re-election for a fifth term this year. Commissioner Sorenson has served Miami-Dade County's District 8 since 1994, working diligently to enhance the quality of life for South Miami-Dade through wise economic and growth management policies, crime prevention initiatives, and protection of the region’s environmental resources.

    Applications for the Mom and Pop Small Business Grant Program in District 8 are no longer available. The application deadline was Monday, February 8 2010.

    Commissioner Katy Sorenson wins approval to develop Lakes by the Bay Park in collaboration with the Town of Cutler Bay

    The Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners passed legislation sponsored by Commissioner Katy Sorenson transferring 49.3 acres of the Lakes by the Bay park property to the Town of Cutler Bay for a long-awaited local recreational park for residents.

    Miami-Dade Department of Solid Waste Management makes free mulch available

    Miami-Dade Department of Solid Waste Management (DSWM) is making free mulch available on a first-come, first-served basis.  The mulch offered is made from recycled Christmas trees and is a fragrant reminder of the holiday season.

    Thanks to a partnership with Publix supermarkets, Miami-Dade County's agricultural industry has taken center stage. Over 1,000 Publix stores will now carry locally grown fruits and vegetables marketed under the Redland Raised brand.
