Commissioner Sorenson, representing District 8 since 1994, has been an outspoken advocate for her community and all of Miami-Dade County. Commissioner Sorenson has worked diligently to enhance the quality of life for South Miami-Dade through wise economic and growth management policies, crime prevention initiatives, and protection of the region’s environmental resources. She has also been a staunch advocate for human rights, a champion of regional cooperation, a leader in child welfare issues, and a promoter of the arts.

The rhythms of steel drums and towering stilt walkers greet festival goers as they are drawn into the magical, island-style celebration that has become the Deering Seafood Festival. On Sunday, March 28th from 11am to 6pm, seafood lovers of all ages come out and spend the day, because this event just keeps getting better.

On February 4, Commissioner Sorenson announced in a press conference that she will not seek re-election for a fifth term this year. The 2nd Annual Cat Spay/Neuter Extravaganza, sponsored in part by Commissioner Katy Sorenson, was a tremendous success.

Applications for the Mom and Pop Small Business Grant Program in District 8 are no longer available. The application deadline was Monday, February 8 2010.

The Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners passed legislation sponsored by Commissioner Katy Sorenson transferring 49.3 acres of the Lakes by the Bay park property to the Town of Cutler Bay for a long-awaited local recreational park for residents. 

Miami-Dade Department of Solid Waste Management (DSWM) is making free mulch available on a first-come, first-served basis.  The mulch offered is made from recycled Christmas trees and is a fragrant reminder of the holiday season.
