Lots of people - more than 2 million - live in Miami-Dade County. We produce huge amounts of waste that must be handled the right way. Most of our waste is converted into electricity.  Some of our waste is recycled and the rest goes to places called landfills.  It's important to manage our waste, and there are three things we can do to help the environment and make every day Earth Day: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Reduce the amount of waste you make by buying products with less packaging. Avoid buying things that are used once then thrown away. For example, a reusable sandwich container can be washed and used again, but a disposable plastic sandwich bag is thrown out after one use.

Reuse items as many times as possible instead of just throwing them away. Or donate items you've already used, such as clothes or toys that are in good condition, to charity.

Recycling is an easy way to help the environment. At home, you can recycle things like magazines, junk mail, empty food boxes, cardboard, glass, cans and plastic bottles with skinny necks. At school, you can recycle all your paper. Imagine how many trees we can save!
