Department of Solid Waste Management Asks Residents to Help Keep Miami-Dade County Clean

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
Miami-Dade County Department of Solid Waste Management (DSWM) has launched a new litter awareness campaign with a new message to residents ? "Don't Trash It. Can It!"

The Department hopes to reduce the amount of litter in Miami-Dade County by encouraging residents to take advantage of garbage cans to 'can' trash instead of littering and illegally dumping in neighborhoods.

"The goal of the project is to decrease the amount of litter in Miami-Dade County," said DSWM Director Kathleen Woods-Richardson.  "Littering and illegal dumping hurt the environment and are against the law. The Department is hard at work collecting trash, but we must all do our part to help keep Miami-Dade County clean."

This year alone, the Department has collected more than 3,505 tons of materials left on the streets of our community by litterers and illegal dumpers. The litter awareness campaign is a DSWM effort to raise public awareness and get residents involved in keeping Miami-Dade County clean.

"In order for future generations to enjoy our surroundings, we must protect our environment.  I encourage every resident in Miami-Dade County to participate in the 'Don't Trash It, Can It!' campaign and encourage others not to litter or dump illegally.  Keeping our neighborhoods clean and safe is the best way to ensure the highest quality of life," said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez.
