Public Interment Program

The purpose of the Public Interment Program (PIP) is to provide final disposition in accordance with the law for those persons who have no family or cannot afford private funeral arrangements.  In order to qualify for this program, the death must have occurred within Miami-Dade County (even though the decedent may not have been a county resident).  Beginning October 4, 2010, the PIP will be charging fees for its services according to the schedule printed below.  Because the PIP can meet only basic needs and may require eight or more weeks to completely process a case, the next of kin are always encouraged to seek alternative means of final disposition.  In the box to the right you may click on “Low Cost Alternatives” to see a list of local funeral service providers you may wish to consider.

PIP Pre-approvals

Regular business hours for the PIP are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.  To assist caregivers (hospices, nursing homes, adult living facilities) with dispositions that may arise during non-business hours, pre-approvals can be made with our office.  See the Pre-approval form available on the menu on this page and the fee for this service below.  The PIP Coordinator, Sandra Witty-Fortunato, can be reached by calling 305-545-2422 or by e-mail at sandraw@miamidade.gov.
