Winter Break Camp Registration Begins Dec. 1

Starting Dec. 22, 2014 - Jan. 2, 2015, kids can participate in fun and affordable winter break camps! Camp hours are from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., with early drop-off available at 7:30 a.m. and late pick-up until 6 p.m. Registration begins Dec. 1.

13th annual Baptist Health South Florida Turkey Day Miami

Baptist Health South Florida Turkey Day MiamiOn Thursday, Nov. 27, more than 5,000 people will kick off their Thanksgiving Day festivities by heading to Tropical Park to take part in the 13th annual Baptist Health South Florida Turkey Day Miami 5K/10K presented by Publix. Life Time – The Healthy Way of Life Company encourages adults and children alike to start the Thanksgiving holiday in a healthy way with a morning fun run/walk and Kid’s Trot for children ages 2-9 years.

Life Time will collect non-perishable food donations with all donations benefiting Feeding South Florida, the leading domestic hunger relief organization in South Florida serving Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties. Those who donate two food items or more on race day will be entered to win a free race entry to The Miami Marathon.

Commissioner Levine Cava takes four-day canoe journey through the Everglades

Commissioner Levine CavaArmed with a pair of GoPro cameras and a stack of “postcards” with educational messages about the importance of the Everglades ecosystem, newly elected County Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava recently set out on a four-day canoe expedition through the famed “River of Grass.”

Everglades “Postcards” will be posted to Commissioner Levine Cava’s Facebook page and available from District 8 website.

 

 

Active older adults make healthy choices with Walgreens

Active AdultsHealthy Choices Clinics by Walgreens is a collaboration between Miami Dade Parks Recreation and Open Spaces and Walgreens which provides local clinics where Active Older Adults, 55 and over, can receive Blood Pressure, Glucose and Cholesterol Screenings and immunizations for Flu, Pneumonia and Shingles.

The Coca-Cola Troops for Fitness Program

Over the next three years, Miami-Dade County will be one of 12 communities seeking to hire nearly 200 veterans to teach fitness and nutrition classes, and to help inspire residents to live healthier, active lifestyles through The Coca-Cola Troops for Fitness Program.

 

 

Areas of Colonial Drive Park temporarily closed

Higher than normal concentrations of arsenic was found in the athletic fields. Park users can expect to see signage and fencing closing off contaminated areas to the public. For more information, please call 305-755-7834.

Heads Up: Concussion in youth sports

To help ensure the health and safety of young athletes, CDC developed the Heads Up: Concussion in Youth Sports initiative to offer information about concussions to coaches, parents, and athletes involved in youth sports.

The Heads Up initiative provides important information on preventing, recognizing, and responding to a concussion. It's Better to Miss One Game Than the Whole Season!
