Elected officials and community leaders participate in Port of Miami Tunnel groundbreaking ceremony

Elected officials and community leaders participate in Port of Miami Tunnel groundbreaking ceremony Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez, along with elected County officials and staff, state legislators and representatives from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), City of Miami, Miami Access Tunnel consortium, and business and community leaders, participated in the official groundbreaking of the Port of Miami Tunnel project on Watson Island.

With the tunnel, "we kept our eye on the prize and we got it done," said County Manager George M. Burgess. But "the work at the port is simply not done. The effort we put into the tunnel a year ago must be repeated" - and "redoubled," the manager told a packed ballroom of chamber goal-setters. "We need to be ready to handle post-Panamax ships."
