Miami-Dade Transit introduces pilot express Metrorail service to and from downtown Miami

MIAMI (December 04, 2015)

For the first time, starting on Monday, Dec. 7, 2015, Miami-Dade Transit will offer pilot express train service to and from Brickell and downtown Miami with the 'Downtown Express.'

"Great cities around the world offer express train service, in particular, during peak-service hours. We’re pleased we can offer this service to commuters, many of whom work in Brickell and downtown Miami," said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez.

Downtown Express trains will depart twice in the morning and twice in the afternoon from Dadeland South and Palmetto stations, with limited stops at selected stations. These trains can be identified by a blue 'e' sign at the front of each express train, in addition to the regular Orange and Green Line signs.

It is important that passengers check the electronic signs at Metrorail stations, or the Miami-Dade Transit Tracker app, to see which trains provide express service. Express trains can be identified by an '(exp)' symbol next to the train's estimated departure time. In addition, MDT staff will be at Metrorail stations to assist passengers and ensure they board the correct trains.

Miami-Dade Transit Director Alice Bravo said the implementation of the Downtown Express is one of several innovative ways in which the County is looking to reduce traffic congestion, and encourage residents to use public transportation as an alternative for their daily commute.

"Under Mayor Carlos Gimenez's leadership, we've been charged with providing viable transportation options for our residents. We believe this new express service will help transit riders save even more time and money on their daily commute," Bravo said.

The pilot program will run for approximately 30 days. During this time, MDT will be handing out informational brochures at train stations. Train riders are encouraged to fill out the survey on the back of the brochure and turn them in to the security guards at Metrorail stations. Detailed information about this pilot express service can be found at the Metrorail 'Downtown Express' page.
